Finishing the Garden

This autumn was a  productive time for the Silver Springs Community Edible Garden Group. With the delivery from City of Calgary of rich garden soil and compost to our site, we were left with a big task.  If the thought of moving this volume seemed somewhat daunting, those thoughts were quickly dispelled on the morning of October 2, with the arrival of 15 exuberant hockey members from the Crowchild Atom 3 Hockey Team. These energetic 8-10 year old hockey players made a significant dint in the mountain of compost and soil with their countless numbers of wheel barrels delivery to boxes and perimeter gardens.  Their enthusiastic work,  positive energy and community spirit was much admired and appreciated. Thank you Coach Mike Lee, Community Activity Leader, Tara Bolparents, parents, grandparents and siblings who also pitched in and encouraged the hockey players with their community task.

On October 3, buoyed by the accomplishment of the previous day, a core group of our garden volunteers returned to the site to complete the filling and building of  30 boxes as well as top loading the perimeter garden areas.  As we proudly took a photo of the last planter box,  we envisioned  bountiful  and wholesome produce next summer.  We also anticipate that this community garden will become an area for community neighbours to come together, to get to know each other a bit better, to learn from each other as we foster sustainable urban gardening.

Agenda for the upcoming meeting mid November include:  User Agreement, how and when the garden boxes will be distributed, budget allocation for early spring of 2011, discussion of donor plantar boxes  as well as draft plans for the perimeter gardens.  Hope to see you there!
